Job Description

Painters preserve the hull and components by sealing the submarine with chemicals and paints that prevent corrosion and protect against the accumulation of marine life. With the use of industrial equipment, painters perform surface preparation and painting functions. Surface preparation involves solvent washing, sanding and/or grit blasting. Painting with water based enamel and epoxy-polyamide coatings is accomplished by brush, roller, airless spray and other specialized equipment. Painters are also required to measure and document paint thicknesses in order to maintain a high level of quality.

Painters also regularly use various shop equipment including table saws, drill presses, routers, sandblast equipment and air and electric hand held tools. This position also involves working at heights and confined spaces as well as the use of air fed respirators and the installation of molds for other types of coatings

Education/ Experience

Seeking all skill levels:

  • Previous paint/coatings or related experience is preferred
  • Previous experience working in the construction industry or a manufacturing environment is desired
  • Previous carpentry or auto body experience or related trade training is preferred
  • Knowledge and use of Graco or equivalent painting tools & equipment helpful
  • NACE certification a plus
  • Military/Navy experience preferred
  • Previous military shipbuilding experience is preferred
  • Ability to read blueprints and work with basic hand and power tools is helpful
  • Experience applying coatings via brush, roller, conventional sprayers & airless sprayers is desired
  • High school diploma/GED preferred; additional preference given for Vocational, Technical and Community Colleges or Apprentice programs
  • Individuals who are either enrolled or have completed the Shipbuilding/Marine Advanced Manufacturing Institute (SAMI) program or individuals who are signed up with Network RI /RI Department of Labor and Training are highly desired
  • On the job training will be provided

Skills

  • Applicant must apply for a DoD security clearance as a condition of employment
  • Must possess basic mathematical, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Must be able to read and interpret written policies, procedures and guidelines
  • Must be able to work all shifts, heights, confined spaces and extreme temperature conditions
  • Applicant will be required to work in a collaborative and team environment and meet organizational goals
  • Individuals are required to possess their own basic hand tools
