Painters preserve the hull and components by sealing the submarine with chemicals and paints that prevent corrosion and protect against the accumulation of marine life. With the use of industrial equipment, painters perform surface preparation and painting functions. Surface preparation involves solvent washing, sanding and/or grit blasting. Painting with water based enamel and epoxy-polyamide coatings is accomplished by brush, roller, airless spray and other specialized equipment. Painters are also required to measure and document paint thicknesses in order to maintain a high level of quality.
Painters also regularly use various shop equipment including table saws, drill presses, routers, sandblast equipment and air and electric hand held tools. This position also involves working at heights and confined spaces as well as the use of air fed respirators and the installation of molds for other types of coatings
