Job Description

This position is for operating the portable orbital welding equipment at the Electric Boat, Quonset Point Facility. Candidates will be trained and qualified to use the orbital welding equipment to weld pipe assemblies for submarine construction.  Day-to-day functions of an Orbital Pipe Welder will be as follows:

 

  • Orbital Welding
  • Basic Programming
  • Visual Inspection

 

Candidates must be mechanically and computer inclined and capable of interpreting welding programs, work packages, drawings, ER's, and SSP's. Orbital Pipe Welding Operators must be willing to work as part of the team between Engineering, Operations, Planning, Facilities and Safety departments.

Pipe Welders perform welding functions on all submarine piping systems materials, including bi-metallic welds in all positions according to weld procedures using GTAW. 

Education/ Experience

  • High school diploma/GED preferred.
  • Basic math skills required.
  • Minimum of 1 Year of Welding experience required
  • Basic understanding of the NDT acceptance criteria for piping components
  • Skilled in the use of computers, specifically in a PC, Windows-based operating environment
  • Previous experience in GTA pipe welding preferred
  • Previous experience in visual inspection (VT) is preferred
  • Knowledge of the EB operating practices of fabrication and manufacturing preferred
  • Familiarity with Military and NAVSEA codes and specifications preferred

 

 

Skills

  • Applicant must apply for a DoD security clearance as a condition of employment
  • Must possess basic mathematical, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Must be able to read and interpret welding and shipyard procedures, structural drawings, technical manuals, test documents and diagrams desired
  • Must be able to work all shifts, at heights, confined spaces (in-tank welding) and extreme temperature conditions (cold, heat) as required
  • Must be able to pass an orbital welding test and meet minimum visual acceptance requirements
  • Applicant will be required to work in a collaborative and team environment and meet organizational goals and follow all verbal and written instructions as directed
  • Some lifting will be required
  • must be able to operate high torque machinery
  • Individuals are required to possess their own basic hand tools
