Job Description

This position is in the Welding Engineering Group of the Quonset Point Engineering Dept. The group provides technical support for both structural and pipe welding of submarine hardware and components while maintaining safety, quality, cost and schedule requirements.  The Welding Engineering Group also supports the multi-disciplinary manufacturing shops - machine, sheet metal, electrical and piping.  Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing technical guidance for the application of all major welding processes (GMAW, SMAW, SAW & GTAW), compliance oversight for submarine construction documents (Navy specifications, EB standard procedures and design drawings) and construction problem resolution
  • Expanding the use of automated welding processes and improving weld quality are key goals of the group
  • Additional responsibilities include providing expertise for major development / expansion projects, development and implementation of process improvement projects and technical review of construction methods, capabilities and sequences


Education/ Experience


  • BS degree in Welding Engineering, Metallurgy/Material Science, Structural/Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering is required; an advanced degree is desirable
  • Candidates must have an in-depth / hands on knowledge of all major welding processes (GMAW, SMAW, SAW & GTAW)
  • In-depth knowledge of metal cutting and joining technologies through welding and allied processes required

Preferred / Desired Skills:

  • Knowledge of welded fabrication specifications (military or commercial), metallurgy and NDT methods highly desirable
  • Knowledge / experience in robotics and lasers, as they relate to metal cutting and joining, is highly desirable
  • Prior welding experience is highly desirable
  • Prior deck plate experience is a plus
  • Candidates must have good written and verbal communication skills



Applicants must apply for a DOD Security Clearance as a condition of employment.  They must be able to obtain and maintain a final secret clearance to remain in that position.
