General Dynamics Etho’s & Corporate Responsibility
Shielding Installation Mechanics are required to cut, fit and install lead and plastic shielding to support submarine construction. This work requires a talented craftsperson with an aptitude to learn and the iability to visualize a job from start to finish as well as painting and installing sound dampening. The mechanics will receive job specific training and will receive qualification to perform each process after a demonstration of ability.
Work includes cutting and fitting shielding using carpentry tools such as bandsaws, table saws, planers, jointers, routers, undercut saws, paint brush, rollers, spray paint equipment. and various pneumatic tools such as handheld chipping hammers, grinders, nail guns and burr tools. Applicants will be required to read and interpret plans and shipyard procedures.
This position is located in North Kingstown RI
High school diploma/GED preferred. Additional preference given for Vocational, Technical and Community Colleges or Apprentice programs.
Semi-Skilled position. 2+ years of related experience is required. Previous experience in carpentry, auto body, painting and coatings is preferred. Applicants currently possessing shielding qualifications preferred.Previous experience working in the construction industry or a manufacturing environment is desired. Military/Navy experience preferred.
Applicant must apply for a DoD security clearance as a condition of employment. Must possess basic mathematical, communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to interpret shipyard procedures, drawings, technical manuals, test documents and diagrams desired. Must be able to work all shifts, in confined spaces and extreme temperature conditions as required. Must be able to qualify for Lead and Poly installion.
Applicant must be able to qualify for, and be comfortable wearing, an air-fed, full face respirator. Applicant will be required to work in a collaborative and team environment and meet organizational goals. Individuals are required to possess their own basic hand tools.
